Burning Infernos - A blaze at the riverbanks close to Meppen halts train service.
Recently, a sequence of embankment fires took place close to Meppen, leading to the closure of the Rheine - Papenburg railroad line. On Tuesday afternoon, the police and fire department control center got multiple calls about multiple locations along the railroad line from Haren municipality to the train station in Meppen where the embankment in the track bed was burning.
After an initial investigation, a spokesperson for the Bad Bentheim Federal Police confirmed that the fires were caused by flying sparks from brakes on two freight wagons. This incident resulted in the closure of the Leer-Münster line by Deutsche Bahn and Westfalenbahn's regional services. Although the firefighters had managed to curb the flames by evening, some parts of the line continued to ignite, necessitating their presence.
