Extensive Price Comparison - A 41% increase in expenses is seen when using gas for heating.
Homes that depend on gas face a hefty price hike, with regions seeing a massive surge in expenses, particularly in the eastern parts of Germany. The situation varies greatly among federal states.
Consider the east vs. the west. A family there pays an extra 10% for gas compared to the west. A website called "Check24" provided this insight.
Gas is most expensive in Thuringia
Here, families pay the highest gas bills in Germany! For consuming 20,000 kWh of gas, a family of 4 in Thuringia spends 2,667 euros, versus 1,898 euros in Hamburg. That's a jaw-dropping 769 euros difference or 41% more annually.
For a single person, gas is also pricier in Thuringia. With a 5,000 kWh gas consumption, a Thuringian friend would pay 94 euros, a third more than in Berlin.
Why easterners pay more for gas
Gas isn't only pricey in Thuringia. Families in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saarland also pay signficantly more for gas compared to other states. In Saxony, families pay 2,625 euros, 2,583 euros in Saxony-Anhalt, and 2,563 euros in Saarland, for consuming 20,000 kWh.
Steffen Suttner, Energy Chief at Check24, explains, "Gas is the most expensive in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saarland. Plus, the houses in these states are older, which means more gas is used."
Gas is surprisingly affordable here
In addition to Hamburg and Berlin, these two states boast cheaper gas costs. Annually, for 20,000 kWh of gas, Berlin households pay merely 1,906 euros.
Gas costs less in the west
The average western consumer pays 10% less for gas than those in the east. A family with 20,000 kWh gas consumption pays 2,268 euros, while in the eastern states they're charged 2,498 euros.
If you're a sole occupant, expect to pay around 7% more for gas in the east than in the west. 5,000 kWh gas expenditure in the east costs 685 euros compared to 635 euros in the west.
Changing gas suppliers is worthwhile
Consumers could save hundreds of dollars per year by switching from the basic supply to other providers, per Check24. Currently, alternative suppliers charge 2,870 euros for 20,000 kWh of gas compared to the basic supply's 2,268 euros. Switching suppliers saves 40% or 602 euros annually.
On average, single-person households could save 291 euros (35%) switching suppliers. If a single person incurred 829 euros for 5,000 kWh basic supply costs, they could slash that bill to 538 euros with a new provider, saving 291 euros.
Suttner says, "Basic supply tariffs can be terminated with two-week notice. Though prices are lowering for basic suppliers, they're still more expensive than gas tariffs from alternative providers. People should check their contracts and switch providers to enjoy long-term cost savings."
