Main Railway Station in Essen - A 27-year-old man assaults a woman and then escapes.
At about 10 pm, a store employee notified the officers that a man had assaulted his ex-partner and then escaped. The officers encountered the 27-year-old man and his 21-year-old female companion from Wuppertal on the southern side of the main train station. They instructed him to stop, but he quickly fled towards Huyssenallee, causing several vehicles to abruptly brake and swerve to avoid a collision. One officer managed to grab his T-shirt, but the man managed to break free.
Disregarding a warning from the irritant spray device, the Herne man and the officer got into a tussle. The man refused to submit to the restraints, folding his arms under his body and repeatedly trying to free himself. The aggressor's brother then arrived, verbally attacked the police officers, and refused to follow their directions. The 22-year-old from Witten initially disregarded their instructions as well.
The police took the man to the federal police station, where he continued to struggle against being escorted and fell down several times. He later complained about chest pain and eye irritation. The officers washed out his eyes and summoned an ambulance. While initially providing his brother's identity card to the police, they eventually found the suspect's identity card in his wallet.
An investigation was initiated by the federal police for assaulting law enforcement officers and assault.
