So, what transpired?
Jenna Sinatra, a 21-year-old, was on her way home when her jaw suddenly became immobile. "I yawned and then my jaw locked," she explained. Her brother thought she was joking. However, it was a serious issue.
In the hospital, the shocking revelation: her jaw dislocated when she yawned! This was clarified by X-rays, among other diagnostic tools.
To alleviate the strain in her facial muscles, doctors provided the panicking woman with certain drugs known as muscle relaxants. They were supposed to alleviate tension.
However, four doctors were needed to place her jaw in its proper position. This was necessary due to the disconnection of the joints connecting the jaw and skull.
Jaw malfunction: causes & prompt solutions
Following the treatment, Jenna could exhale a sigh of relief and close her mouth again. However, a doctor cautioned her, "It can happen again." Subsequently, Jenna is more cautious. She confirms, "I'm scared of yawning."
