Hofreiter, a political figure with a green agenda, urges for action. - 500 billion euros earmarked for Europe's defensive measures

Hofreiter stressed the importance of utilizing the funds to bolster Europe's infrastructure. "Well-functioning roads, bridges, and railways not only serve commuting, travel, and the economy. They also serve as a base for our defense capabilities," he said.

As for financing, the green politician suggested that the defense fund should be laid out similarly to the Corona Reconstruction Fund. "The EU Commission could borrow on the capital markets for this," he proposed.

Hofreiter also addressed the potential defense strikes by Ukraine on Russian soil. "This is about protecting the Ukrainian population. We should, consequently, allow Ukraine to utilize the provided weapons to defend against Russian fighter jets in their airspace," he said.

Background: Since Russia's incursion last year, Ukraine's Western backers have frequently emphasized that the weapons furnished were for self-defense and should not be used to assault Russia. Nonetheless, the US is currently discussing giving Ukraine permission to fire on Russian territory with Western arms.
