Following storms in Rhineland-Palatinate, - 25 water buffaloes saved from flooding

In Asia, there lives a creature known as the water buffalo - a strong swimmer in its own right. But even these animals couldn't withstand the power of the recent floods. Just look at this heart-wrenching incident in Hornbach, Rhineland-Palatinate.

With floodwaters rapidly rising, the Contwig Animal Rescue Service sprang into action, utilizing off-road vehicles to navigate their way through the water to aid the 25 drowning buffalo.

As if their mission wasn't challenging enough, they faced a race against time. "Every second counted," explained the operation's lead. Eventually, 10 rescuers were able to guide the buffalo to safety, with some of them in a complete state of shock. The rescuers then called upon a vet to assess the buffalo's injuries from stray tree branches and trunks. Thankfully, they took the buffalo to a temporary place of shelter.

The current is too strong: the cattle can't get ashore

It didn't end there. The animal rescuers from Contwig were needed again and again across Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, where heavy rainfall had flooded an abundance of pastures and stables. More than 100 such missions were carried out. The animal rescue team was called upon to save horses, sheep, and even chickens and cats who were in danger of losing their lives due to the floods.

However, the story doesn't have a perfect ending. Two horses were trapped in their stables and faced a wall of water by their doors. Miraculously, two dogs, 36 chickens, and several cats were pulled from the water before it was too late. Sadly, some cats and fawns did not make it and drowned.

The looming threat isn't over yet: the German weather service has forecasted more hours of rain for the southwest on Tuesday afternoon.

The team of volunteers kindly requests donations to cover the costs of veterinary expenses, vehicle maintenance, and emergency materials. Otherwise, the service would fall apart.
