Las Vegas Sphere begins four-month AI-generated art residency

This Super Blue Moon isn't the only big ball show lighting up Las Vegas this week. Refik Anadol, an artist who uses artificial intelligence as a medium, will use the MSG Sphere's external screens as the canvas for his latest installation starting Friday, September 1.

“Machine Illusion: Sphere” will be released as part of a four-month “residency” at Anadol and Sphere’s so-called “Exosphere,” 580,000 square feet of fully programmable LED panels surrounding the venue.

Anadol’s installation uses artificial intelligence data sculpture to create abstract images of space and nature in vivid shapes and colors, all created from vast amounts of data.

“It’s an honor to be the first artist to use the Sphere look,” Anadol said in a press release. "It's exciting to bring such architectural and engineering marvels to life on canvas. This opportunity fits perfectly with our studio's long-standing mission to embed media arts into architecture, creating living architectural works that constantly interact with their surroundings."

Previous installation

The native of Turkey, who lives and works in Los Angeles, began his career creating permanent digital data paintings as publicly commissioned art. These include “Virtual Depictions” in San Francisco (2015) and “Wind of Boston” in South Boston (2017).

He is inspired by his studio’s collaboration with NASA JPL’s Machine Illusion series and his long-term research into the history of space exploration photography. The first installation was carried out in 2019 for Artechouse NYC, a digital art space in New York’s Chelsea Market.

The $2.3 billion Sphere is scheduled to open to the public on September 29 and will host U2 matches in December.
